Bedford Hospital

At Wednesday’s Council meeting, I asked how the withdrawal of junior doctors from Bedford’s Paediatric Unit would impact on Milton Keynes services.

A response has since been received.

Bedford Hospital

In response to the question at Council on Wednesday 10 July regarding the potential impact of the decision to withdraw trainee doctors from the paediatric department at Bedford Hospital, Bedford Hospital has announced that it is expecting changes to be made to its children’s services in the coming days. This follows concerns about the supervision of trainee doctors.

Following discussions involving Health Education East of England and the General Medical Council, the decision has been made to withdraw the most junior medical trainees from Bedford Hospital paediatric department on an interim basis. Senior medical trainees (specialty registrars) will remain in post.

Bedford Hospital’s maternity services, including the neonatal unit, are not affected by these changes and will continue as normal.

Local health partners including Milton Keynes Hospital, Bedford Hospital, Milton Keynes Clinical Commissioning Group (CCG) and Bedfordshire CCG are developing plans to safely manage the changes to children’s services. Partners are keeping us appraised of the developing situation. The aim is to ensure children and families receive safe, continuing care as locally as possible. We have every expectation that this will be the case, and are not aware of any concerns regarding the impact on Milton Keynes Hospital.

The Hospital’s Chief Operating Officer has assured us that we will receive updates as plans progress, and we will share further useful information with you when we can.
