Central Gap Closure – Grafton Street (V6) jw Oldbrook Blvd

Milton Keynes Council has introduced an experimental right turn ban at the junction of Grafton Street (V6) northbound into Oldbrook Boulevard eastbound, as a result of safety issues surrounding this junction.

Accident data (taken between 1st October 2011 and 3oth September 2014) shows that there have been eight Personal Injury Collisions at the junction of Grafton Street (V6) and Oldbrook Boulevard.  These accidents resulted in twenty-two casualties, one of which was a fatality.

Further analysis of the traffic movements for these incidents shows that six of the eight collisions involved turning right from Grafton Street into Oldbrook Boulevard.

Since the beginning of 2015 there has been at least one reported right-turn collision at this junction which resulted in a vehicle over-turning onto its’ roof. Thankfully, on this occasion, the driver was not seriously injured.

Therefore the decision has been made to close the central cross-over to prevent the right turn movement from the northbound carriageway of Grafton Street (V6) onto Oldbrook Boulevard.  This safety measure will prevent any further incidents from occurring.

The prohibition of right turn manoeuvres will be implemented through an Experimental Traffic Regulation Order (ETRO) for a period of 12 months before deciding whether or not to make it permanent.  The central gap will be closed by means of concrete blocks which will prevent any vehicles from making a right turn manoeuvre.

In order to support the experimental right turn ban, the Council will also be introducing a u-turn ban at the junction of Grafton Street (V6) and Cairngorm Gate.
